MapQuest adds feature to reveal license plate reader locations

MapQuest has introduced a new feature in its navigation app that allows users to identify the locations of automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) in their vicinity. By enabling a ‘Surveillance’ layer, users can see icons on the map indicating the presence of cameras from various providers, including Flock Safety, Motorola Solutions, Axon, and Genetec. The feature provides specific details such as the type of reader and its exact coordinates.

The expansion of ALPR technology has raised significant privacy and legal concerns. There are currently over 140,000 such readers across the United States. Critics argue that the mass collection of data—including license plate numbers, vehicle make, model, color, and location history—constitutes a form of mass surveillance that may infringe upon Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.

While proponents argue that these systems are essential for law enforcement to solve crimes, opponents express concern regarding the potential for government overreach and the lack of due process if automated systems are used to track everyday movements without specific suspicion.
