Mapuche communities mobilize against evictions in Argentina

Mapuche communities and social organizations held a large-scale mobilization in the Neuquén and Río Negro regions of Argentina to protest against eviction orders. Caravans departed from Villa La Angostura and Bariloche, heading toward the Lof Kinxikew and Lof Melo territories to demonstrate resistance and demand political solutions to ongoing land conflicts.

Protesters directed their demands toward Neuquén Governor Rolando Figueroa and Minister of Government Jorge Tobares. The movement seeks guarantees for the territorial protection of approximately 70 indigenous communities. Key demands include the reactivation of territorial surveys under Law 26.160, the formal registration of new communities, and the effective application of the right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consultation regarding development projects on their lands.

Community leaders, including Loncos Lucas Melo and Amancay Quintriqueo, emphasized their commitment to remaining on the land. They criticized the provincial government for allegedly failing to prevent violent evictions and accused authorities of enabling illegal procedures that jeopardize the safety of families, including children and the elderly.
