Mozambique implements new aviation framework and urban transit projects

Mozambique is implementing several major infrastructure and regulatory updates. The government has reclassified 12 airports into four categories—international, regional, international entry points, and domestic—to align with the International Civil Aviation Convention. Key international hubs include Maputo, Beira, and Nacala.

In Maputo, a $250 million Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, funded by the World Bank and constructed by China Henan International Cooperation Group, has commenced. The system aims to transport 40 million passengers annually by 2028, improving mobility across the metropolitan area.

The Maputo Municipal Council has also introduced new regulations for its coastline. These include opening opportunities for small tourism businesses while enforcing strict environmental and safety rules, such as maintaining the ban on alcohol consumption on beaches.

Additionally, the Ministry of Public Works is addressing climate resilience by discussing water security measures in response to El Niño, alongside addressing housing needs driven by urban expansion.
