Maputo Port begins $150 million dredging project
Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo has launched a $150 million dredging project for the Maputo Port access channel. The initiative is part of a larger investment program exceeding $2 billion aimed at enhancing the port's capacity to handle larger vessels and compete in international and regional logistics markets.
The dredging will expand the channel width to approximately 210 meters in straight sections and 295 meters in curves, allowing ships up to 366 meters in length and 14,000 TEU capacity to navigate with drafts near 15 meters.
President Chapo emphasized that the project is strategically designed to transform Mozambique into a regional economic force within the SADC region. By connecting industrial centers in South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, and Botswana to international markets, the port aims to drive investment, increase exports, and create opportunities for local small and medium-sized enterprises, youth, and women. He also stressed the need for integrated administrative efficiency at borders and roads to ensure maritime time savings are not lost to bureaucratic delays.
