Maputo seeks African Development Bank support for waste management

The city of Maputo is facing significant challenges in waste management and sanitation. Local authorities report that the municipality currently collects only 60% of the approximately 1,366 tons of waste produced daily in the capital. This deficit leads to the accumulation of waste in drainage ditches, roadsides, and coastal areas.

To address these issues, the Municipal Sanitation and Drainage Company (EMSD) is exploring support from the African Development Bank (AfDB). The proposed cooperation aims to improve the management of wastewater treatment plants and drainage infrastructure. A key focus of this initiative is the circular economy, specifically the potential to transform fecal sludge into raw materials for agricultural fertilizers.

In the short term, the municipality plans to distribute 100 new waste containers and reinforce its fleet with five new trucks. Long-term structural solutions include the construction of the KaTembe Sanitary Landfill, which will feature sorting, recycling, and gas capture areas, alongside the gradual closure and environmental rehabilitation of the Hulene landfill.
