Maputo's dual urban identity reflects colonial history

Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, maintains a dual identity shaped by its history as a Portuguese colony until 1975. The city is characterized by the distinction between the ‘cidade de cimento’ (cement city) and the ‘cidade de caniço’ (reed city).

The ‘cidade de cimento’ represents the planned colonial core, featuring solid infrastructure and imposing buildings like the railway station and the Baixa district. In contrast, the ‘cidade de caniço’ refers to the neighborhoods originally reserved for the African population, which grew around the colonial center.

While the strict colonial-era divisions have softened, socioeconomic disparities persist. The physical distance between these areas is often measured by the time and transport required to navigate them, frequently utilizing ‘chapas’ (minibuses) to connect the peripheral neighborhoods to the city center.
