Mar del Plata fishing census reveals hake dominance

The 2023-2024 Industrial Fishing Census has identified 236 active processing plants in the General Pueyrredon district, revealing a production structure heavily reliant on fresh fish processing and hake.

According to research conducted by the Observatorio de Problemáticas Pesqueras (part of INHUS-CONICET-UNMdP), the sector is dominated by hake processing with operational links extending to major Patagonian ports. The census data shows that 146 of the identified plants operate as companies (61.9%), 43 function as worker cooperatives, and 42 are classified as informal establishments.
