Mar del Plata residents protest insecurity, demand police action
Governor Elías Suárez convened an expanded cabinet meeting in Argentina’s provincial government to review major public policies, including flood‑prevention works, new professional agreements and the acceleration of strategic programs such as Santiago Crece con Vos and the digital platform ServicioSGO.
In Mar del Plata, residents marched to the provincial police headquarters after three murders in 24 hours, confronting police barriers and demanding increased patrols, faster investigations and stronger security measures. Protesters voiced frustration over rising crime, calling for “security and justice” and urging authorities to change laws that they say protect perpetrators.
The mayor of Balcarce, Esteban Reino, met with the provincial Ministry of Security and local police representatives to press for a new security force in the district, seeking greater public‑order presence in both urban and rural areas. Officials agreed to hold regular coordination meetings to monitor crime trends and evaluate preventive actions.
In Chacabuco, Mayor Darío Golía, together with provincial Minister of Government Carlos Bianco and police officials, inaugurated a new Subdelegation of Police Scientific, staffed by nine officers and led by Subcomisaria Valeria Admiral. The same visit included the signing of a framework agreement on urban planning and the delivery of laptops to local schools under the Conectar Igualdad program.
Former Buenos Aires provincial police chief Marcelo Di Pasqua criticized the police response to the Mar del Plata protests, accusing authorities of criminalising demonstrators while failing to address systemic issues such as fuel shortages for patrol vehicles and overall security policy.
