Mar del Plata to pilot AI-driven adaptive traffic lights
Mar del Plata is launching a pilot program to implement adaptive traffic lights powered by artificial intelligence to optimize vehicle flow. The trial will take place at the intersection of Juan B. Justo and De los Trabajadores avenues.
Managed by the Municipality of General Pueyrredón through the Municipal Entity of Roads and Public Lighting (EMVIAL), the project involves installing detection and counting cameras at all four movements of the intersection. The existing traffic light controller will be replaced with new equipment capable of processing real-time data.
The collected data will feed an AI system designed to analyze traffic behavior and automatically adjust signal timings based on current demand, moving away from fixed programming. The implementation will be gradual, starting with an initial phase of at least two weeks using current programming before transitioning to the adaptive mode under technical supervision.
