Mar del Plata winter tourism slump sees bus services drop 11% and hotel occupancy under 30%

During the first week of the 2026 winter vacation, long‑distance bus services (micros) from Mar del Plata fell 11% compared with the same period last year, according to the local Estación Ferroautomotora.

Hotel occupancy in Mar del Plata was only about 25% early in the week and peaked at roughly 30% on Saturday 25 July, far below typical winter levels. In nearby Necochea, hotels reported occupancy of just 19%.

Business owners described streets as “very quiet,” with low patronage of bars, restaurants and retail outlets. Promotional discounts and easier payment options failed to lift demand, which they attribute to cautious consumer spending and the distraction of recent international sporting events. Operators hope the second half of the vacation period will bring a modest rebound.
