María Consuelo Córdoba considers euthanasia after 26 years of acid attack recovery

María Consuelo Córdoba, a Colombian woman who survived a brutal acid attack by her husband 26 years ago, has gained renewed public attention regarding her desire to access euthanasia.

Since the attack in 2000, Córdoba has undergone approximately 87 reconstructive surgeries to address severe facial disfigurement and respiratory difficulties. She has also faced significant economic hardship and social isolation. While a viral report suggested she was waiting for medical approval, the health provider Capital Salud EPS clarified that she has actually held authorization for euthanasia for four years and may exercise this right autonomously.

In previous interviews, Córdoba noted that during a 2017 visit to Bogotá, Pope Francis had encouraged her to continue living, promising that Colombia would help her secure necessary surgeries. However, she expressed that the physical and emotional toll of her long-term suffering has led her to reconsider her decision to seek a dignified death.
