Luisa González arrested in Ecuador campaign finance probe

Ecuadorian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Luisa González was detained in the Manabí province on October 22, 2026. The arrest is part of the ‘Laberinto’ investigation, which examines alleged money laundering and irregular financing related to her 2023 presidential campaign.

The Prosecutor’s Office is investigating approximately $500,000 in campaign advertising expenses to determine if funds were channeled through an improper network of entities. In addition to González, authorities have detained collaborator Estefanía Molina and Santiago Díaz Asque, while Andrés Arauz remains under investigation.

González and the Revolución Ciudadana party have denounced the move as political persecution and a sign of a “dictatorship” under President Daniel Noboa. Conversely, President Noboa has accused former Colombian President Gustavo Petro of having links to the drug trafficking and money laundering structures being investigated.
