María Corina Machado Excluded from US‑Venezuela Dialogue

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia positioned themselves to assume power after the U.S. operation that captured President Nicolás Maduro on 3 January. The United States, however, has resumed diplomatic and commercial contacts with Venezuela’s interim government, meeting directly with interim president Delcy Rodríguez and conducting a dialogue that does not include Machado or her opposition bloc.

Machado says she maintains good relations with U.S. officials, claiming that former President Donald Trump has her phone number and has called her. She described Maduro’s capture as “an act of justice” and thanked Washington for its support. Despite being excluded from the talks, Machado affirmed she will not obstruct the negotiations and will accompany the process as long as it respects the popular mandate. The dialogue, led by Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez and opposition deputy Dinorah Figuera, is set to begin in August with a first in‑person meeting in Caracas.

The parties also signed a Panama Agreement in May that outlines a roadmap for political negotiations and future elections, but the United States has chosen to hold the next round of talks without Machado’s participation.
