María Fernanda Cabal disputes accusations from Colombian Ombudsman

Colombian politician María Fernanda Cabal has entered a dispute with Ombudsman Iris Marín regarding the historical interpretation of the extermination of the Unión Patriótica (UP) political party.

Following an interview with La Silla Vacía, Marín issued a letter accusing Cabal of using stigmatizing discourse related to the violence against the UP. Cabal defended her position by arguing that the history of violence against the party is complex and involved various armed actors, rather than being solely the responsibility of the State.

Cabal criticized the Ombudsman's office, claiming that Marín used her position to stigmatize alternative interpretations of historical events. While Marín cited an Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruling regarding State responsibility for the extermination of the UP, Cabal noted that the same court recognized that the violence was carried out by both state and non-state actors.
