María Fernanda Espinosa Nominated for UN Secretary‑General Succession
Former Ecuadorian foreign and defence minister María Fernanda Espinosa has been put forward as a candidate to succeed UN Secretary‑General António Guterres. The nomination was made by the Caribbean nation Antigua and Barbuda and announced by a United Nations General Assembly spokesperson on Tuesday. Espinosa previously served as President of the UN General Assembly from September 2018 to September 2019, making her the fifth contender in the race.
