María José Pizarro denies links to Iván Name UNGRD scandal

Former Senator María José Pizarro has issued a formal statement denying any involvement in the corruption scandal involving the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) that led to the loss of investiture for former Senator Iván Name.

Pizarro addressed the Council of State's first-instance decision to strip Name of his seat, noting that her name appeared frequently in the ruling. She explained that her presence in the sessions mentioned in the case was strictly institutional, as she served as the First Vice President of the Senate starting July 20, 2023. In that role, she was required to preside over various plenary sessions, including those concerning the pension reform, when the Senate President was absent.

Pizarro emphasized that her conduct during these sessions is fully documented in official Senate minutes and audiovisual records. She rejected attempts by political sectors and media to link her to the irregular actions attributed to Name, asserting that she had no knowledge of the activities under investigation.
