Cancún begins demolition of old hospital for new maternity center

Demolition has begun on the former General Hospital of Cancún, a facility that has been out of service since 2017. The site is being cleared to make way for a new Materno Infantil Hospital under the IMSS-Bienestar program.

Projected to cost approximately 640 million pesos for construction and equipment, the new medical unit will focus on specialized care for pregnant women, newborns, children, and their families. The facility is expected to feature more than 100 beds, seven consultation rooms, and three operating rooms. It will also include specialized areas for gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics, neonatology, and perinatology, alongside a neonatal intensive care unit, laboratory, and diagnostic services.

Local authorities, including Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta, noted that the project aims to address the high demand for maternal and child healthcare in the Benito Juárez municipality, where the Civil Registry reports between 27 and 40 births daily.
