María Montez International Airport remains operational despite facility deterioration

Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) has confirmed that the María Montez International Airport in Barahona remains operational and capable of receiving various types of aircraft. Luis José López, Aerodom’s Corporate Communications Director, stated that the terminal is functional despite a lack of regular commercial flights and limited movement of private and military aircraft.

While the airport maintains a runway of approximately 3,000 meters, physical inspections of the terminal revealed signs of neglect, including deteriorated floors, leaks, and rusted metal structures in passenger areas.

Due to its proximity to Haiti, questions have arisen regarding whether the airport will be used for international operations related to the Haitian security crisis, including potential military missions from El Salvador. However, no aircraft movements related to the situation in Haiti have been reported at the facility to date.
