Maraş pepper geographical indication covers six Turkish provinces
The Maraş pepper, a significant regional agricultural product known for its red color and thin flesh, has a geographical indication registration that extends beyond Kahramanmaraş. According to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, the protected geographical area includes Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Kilis, and Şanlıurfa.
The registration defines specific physical characteristics for the product, noting that the peppers are conical with a fruit length between 60 and 115 millimeters and a flesh thickness of 1.2 to 1.6 millimeters. Not all red peppers bearing the Maraş name automatically meet the criteria for the geographical indication, as products must adhere to the official production and physical standards to be protected under the designation.
Separately, regarding food preservation, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that placing a whole walnut in tomato or pepper paste prevents mold growth. Experts recommend following packaging instructions, storing paste in the refrigerator, using clean and dry spoons, and ensuring lids are tightly sealed to minimize moisture and air contact.
