Mara raises $7 million for autonomous counter-drone system

San Francisco-based defense technology startup Mara has announced the completion of a $7 million Pre-Seed funding round. The round was led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from several other venture capital firms including a16z's Speedrun accelerator.

Mara is developing Spike, an autonomous counter-drone defense system designed to combat low-cost FPV suicide drones. Unlike traditional electronic warfare systems that use signal jamming, Spike utilizes a “hard-kill” method. The system consists of two primary components: the Spotter, which uses visual, acoustic, and radar sensors for passive detection, and the Seeker, a 300-gram interceptor drone.

The Seeker drone uses AI-driven target recognition and infrared thermal imaging to intercept threats through kinetic impact rather than explosives. This approach aims to provide a significantly more cost-effective solution than traditional missile-based defense systems. Mara has already been selected for NATO's DIANA innovation accelerator program and is collaborating with several countries, including the UK, Czech Republic, Poland, and Ukraine.
