Lawyer María Rocío Cortés Vargas is being considered to lead Colombia’s Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC), following the departure of Cielo Rusinque. The potential appointment by the government of Abelardo de la Espriella has sparked debate regarding the professional profile required for the role, which oversees consumer protection, free competition, industrial property, and personal data.

Critics, including academic Daniel Alejandro Monroy, have questioned whether Cortés’s background as a criminal lawyer is appropriate for an entity focused on market regulation and economic oversight. Similar debates occurred during the previous administration regarding the technical expertise of leadership.

Additionally, Cortés’s past judicial career has drawn scrutiny. While serving as a magistrate in the Disciplinary Chamber of the Superior Council of the Judicature, the Council of State provisionally suspended her appointment due to an electoral nullity lawsuit involving potential constitutional restrictions on the selection of officials.
