Maracaibo hosts cinema and memory forum

The 'Cine, Memoria y Ciudad' forum was recently held at the Luis Chacón Museum in Maracaibo to discuss the relationship between cinema and the city's history. The event was a collaborative effort between the Maracaibo Mayor's Office, the Ministry of Culture, and the Cinemateca de Maracaibo.

During the forum, speakers addressed the decline of local cinema infrastructure. Luis Medina, representing the National Cinematheque Foundation, noted that Maracaibo possessed nearly fifty commercial movie theaters in the 1950s, many of which have since fallen into ruin or been converted into religious sites. He emphasized that cinema served as a vital cultural and social epicenter for the community's identity.

The panel featured several audiovisual experts, including filmmaker Michael Labarca, Ionesco Troconis, and Augusto Pradelli. Participants discussed how audiovisual memory serves as a fundamental pillar for understanding regional history and collective heritage.
