Maracaibo launches cultural festival and sport challenge to spur tourism and health

On Saturday, May 29, Maracaibo’s municipal tourism office hosted a special edition of the ¡Vive la Retreta! festival in Plaza de la República. More than 60 local micro‑entrepreneurs were given free stalls, and the program featured musical groups, dance performances, a Michael Jackson‑inspired show and children’s activities such as inflatables and face painting. The event is part of a series aimed at revitalising public spaces, promoting the city’s culture and boosting the local economy.

In parallel, the city celebrated World Challenge Day, mobilising thousands of residents across its 18 parishes for a coordinated 15‑minute bout of physical activity. Organized by the Institute of Municipal Sports and Recreation, the initiative involved schools, community councils, senior groups and private organisations. “We are satisfied with the development of the activities. Significant concentrations were achieved, showing that we are an active and health‑conscious population,” said Guadalupe Guevara, manager of sports programs. The dual effort underscores Maracaibo’s push to become a regional reference for both culture and sport.
