Maracanã stadium use remains uncertain for Vasco vs. Boca Juniors
The venue for the Copa Sudamericana semifinal second leg between Vasco da Gama and Boca Juniors remains uncertain following a legal reversal in Rio de Janeiro. While a previous court order mandated the Maracanã stadium be released for the October 20 match, the Tribunal de Justiça do Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ) has since suspended that decision.
Judge Suely Lopes Magalhães revoked the initial ruling, citing concerns over judicial competence and potential security risks. The court noted that a basketball game was scheduled at the Maracanãzinho on the same night, which could lead to dangerous concentrations of fans. The stadium's management consortium, Fla-Flu, had also argued for the preservation of the pitch.
Vasco da Gama has appealed the decision, noting that over 46,000 tickets have already been sold. The club argues that moving the match to the Nilton Santos stadium would be problematic, as its capacity is lower than the number of tickets already sold, potentially necessitating mass refunds.
In terms of squad updates, Vasco has traveled to Argentina for the first leg. The team will feature players like Alan Lescano and Gabriel Pereira, though Facundo Colidio is ineligible to play due to registration rules. The match in Buenos Aires will precede the high-stakes second leg in Brazil.
