MARAD awards $498 million to modernize US ports and supply chains

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has announced a $498 million investment through the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) to modernize maritime gateways across the United States. The funding targets 35 projects spanning 19 states, aimed at strengthening supply chains and securing maritime dominance.

Key projects include $50.6 million for the City of Whittier, Alaska, to replace docks and acquire cranes, and $30.75 million for Port Everglades, Florida, to harden liquid bulk terminals and improve weather resilience. Other significant allocations include $11.25 million for the North Carolina State Ports Authority-MHC to construct heavy-lift decks and install security software, and $10.16 million for the Red Wing Port Authority in Minnesota to reconstruct barge loading systems.

In Alaska specifically, $105 million of the total funding is directed toward six critical maritime projects in locations including Whittier, Unalaska, Kodiak, Nome, Anchorage, and Kake. These investments are intended to support modernization and expansion of harbors and docks from Southeast Alaska to the Arctic.
