Maradona death trial continues in Buenos Aires

The criminal trial over former football star Diego Maradona's 2020 death is ongoing in Buenos Aires. Seven health‑care professionals, including the home‑care nursing coordinator, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and doctors, face charges of "homicide with implied malice" for alleged negligence that may have caused his fatal cardiac arrest and pulmonary edema.

Witnesses testified that the nursing coordinator, Marianno Perón, never entered Maradona's rented house in Tigre and had no contact with the patient’s entourage. He said, "I never had access to the house, I never entered. I didn't know anyone." The trial has also highlighted the lack of basic medical equipment in the home, with the defendant nurse coordinator claiming she never received a request for an ambulance, a doctor or a neurologist for Maradona. Another witness, lawyer Victor Stinfale, remarked that "some people handled the situation very badly." The proceedings, which began in April, feature two hearings per week and may extend beyond July, with potential prison sentences of up to 25 years for each defendant.
