Maradona death trial: Psychiatrist defends prescribed medication

In the ongoing trial regarding the death of football legend Diego Maradona, psychiatrist Aníbal Areco testified that the pharmacological plan prescribed by psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov was “the correct one.” Areco stated that the dosages were within therapeutic values and ruled out the possibility of toxicity or cardiotoxicity resulting from the medication.

This testimony from the defense contradicts previous experts called by the prosecution, who questioned whether the psychotropic drugs administered during Maradona’s home care contributed to liver, kidney, or heart issues. Areco also suggested there was no clear indication that the patient required the specific type of home care provided.

Seven health professionals are currently facing charges of simple homicide with eventual intent regarding the circumstances of Maradona's death in November 2020. The trial, which began in April in San Isidro, is expected to move toward closing arguments following a final hearing scheduled for late September, with arguments set to begin on October 6.
