Maramureș faces unprecedented drought and rising natural disaster risks

Maramureș is currently facing an unprecedented drought, according to Gabriel Zetea, president of the Maramureș County Council. He reported a 90% decrease in precipitation over the last year, noting that historical springs in the Maramureș Mountains have dried up completely, affecting every locality in the county.

Zetea warned that the return of rain may not signal the end of the danger, as intense rainfall following a long drought can lead to significant risks for homes and communities. He also highlighted that local administrations are facing increased responsibilities without sufficient funding to address these environmental challenges.

In the context of increasing natural risks, Valentin Ionescu of the Financial Supervisory Authority addressed the importance of adequate home insurance. He noted that voluntary home insurance remains low in Romania, with only approximately 17% of homes covered. Ionescu emphasized that homeowners must understand their policy limits, conditions, and exclusions to ensure they are truly protected during events like storms or water damage.
