Ukraine discusses moving border controls to neighboring countries

Ukraine is exploring the possibility of relocating its border control and customs operations to the territory of neighboring countries. This proposal serves as a contingency plan in the event that Russian attacks target and disable Ukrainian border infrastructure.

Serhii Derkach, the deputy minister of Reconstruction and Infrastructure, stated that discussions are ongoing with neighbors to establish these alternatives. While a formal agreement has not yet been reached with Romania, a memorandum was signed in September regarding infrastructure development and simplified controls. In contrast, Ukraine and Poland are already working toward a formal agreement for joint control, a system that is currently operational at five points along the Ukrainian-Polish border.
