Maranhão authorities investigate Nazi imagery at political event
Authorities in Maranhão, Brazil, are investigating three men suspected of promoting Nazi and fascist ideologies during a political rally in Grajaú on Saturday, November 24. The investigation follows the circulation of social media images showing individuals wearing shirts featuring Nazi symbols and fascist slogans.
Maranhão Governor Carlos Brandão condemned the incident, stating that ideologies responsible for historical atrocities cannot be tolerated. The case has been referred to the Federal Police and the Regional Electoral Court of Maranhão (TRE-MA).
Civil Police have identified the suspects, two of whom are reportedly the adult sons of local businessmen. During the investigation, the suspects' social media profiles were deactivated. While investigators are looking into the origin of the images, the families of the suspects claim the photographs may have been manipulated using artificial intelligence. Additionally, police officers present in a patrol vehicle visible in the photos are scheduled to testify to determine if there was any professional omission or failure to act.
