Maranhão court grants temporary release to 736 inmates

The 3rd Criminal Execution Court (VEP) of São Luís has authorized 736 inmates in Maranhão to receive temporary release for Children's Day. The measure, formalized by Judge Joelma Santos via Ordinance-TJ nº 3635/2026, allows eligible individuals to spend time with their families.

Beneficiaries are permitted to leave correctional facilities starting at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, October 7, and must return by 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October 13. The release is restricted to inmates serving sentences in a semi-open regime who meet specific legal requirements, including good behavior and having served at least one-sixth of their sentence for first-time offenders or one-fourth for repeat offenders.

The list of beneficiaries has been forwarded to the Secretary of Penitentiary Administration of Maranhão, Murilo Andrade de Oliveira, for implementation. Following the period, the Penal Police Directorate is required to submit a report to the court regarding those who returned on time and any who failed to do so.
