Maranhão Electoral Court orders Meta to preserve data on alleged beverage distribution
The Electoral Court of Maranhão has ordered Meta Platforms to preserve data and records from an Instagram post regarding the alleged distribution of beer during a political event. The investigation follows a complaint by the 'Avanço por Todo Maranhão' coalition, which claims that free beverages were distributed during a campaign 'adesivaço' event.
The case involves federal deputy candidate Nilson Takashi Hamada and Maranhão gubernatorial candidate Eduardo Braide, who is cited as a possible beneficiary of the conduct. The coalition alleges the practice could constitute an irregular advantage in an electoral context or illicit vote buying.
Judge Manuela Viana dos Santos Faria Ribeiro noted that the photographic evidence provided does not currently prove that the drinks were exchanged for votes, nor does it establish the direct participation or consent of the candidates. However, the court ordered the preservation of the digital evidence to facilitate the investigation. Meta Platforms faces a daily fine of R$ 10,000 for non-compliance with the order.
