Maranhão Governor demands faster federal highway works

Maranhão Governor Carlos Brandão has met with the Director-General of the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), Fabrício Galvão, in Brasília to demand accelerated repairs on federal highways BR-135 and BR-222.

Regarding BR-135, specifically the stretch between Estreito dos Mosquitos and Bacabeira, DNIT reported that a bridge structure requires replacement. A contract for a new bridge is expected to be signed this week, with construction estimated to take approximately 18 months. The governor also addressed the traffic congestion caused by these works.

On BR-222, discussions focused on concrete paving between Miranda and Santa Inês, as well as recovery works between Entroncamento and Chapadinha. DNIT stated that the works for the latter section have already been bid and contracted with guaranteed funding.

In a separate political development, Governor Brandão refuted claims made by candidate Eduardo Braide regarding responsibility for traffic delays on BR-135. Brandão clarified that the highway and its structures are under federal administration via DNIT, not the state government, and emphasized his ongoing efforts to coordinate with the federal Ministry of Transport to resolve the issues.
