Maranhão gubernatorial candidates outline key policy platforms

Candidates for the governorship of Maranhão have outlined their primary policy priorities during recent interviews.

André Luís expressed opposition to the privatization of the state sanitation company, Caema, arguing that the state-owned entity is essential for helping municipalities meet legal sanitation targets. Regarding healthcare, he proposed replacing outsourced management models in public hospitals with professionals hired through public civil service examinations. To drive economic growth, he suggested leveraging the strategic location of the Porto do Itaqui to encourage local industrialization.

Felipe Camarão stated that education would be the central pillar of his administration. His proposals include reviving the ‘Escola Digna’ program, expanding full-time vocational schooling, and establishing higher education units across the state. Camarão aims to distribute specific degree programs regionally to align with local economic vocations, such as agribusiness in southern Maranhão, to ensure the local workforce is properly qualified.
