Maranhão launches motorcycle safety and income program
The government of Maranhão has implemented the 'Avança Maranhão: Trânsito Seguro é a Gente que Faz' program, an initiative designed to integrate road safety, professional qualification, and income generation for motorcycle workers.
To address high accident rates among motorcyclists, the program offered 6,000 free training slots across 72 municipalities, including 4,000 specifically for defensive driving. Following this training, the initiative has distributed hundreds of new motorcycles to workers, including an initial 100 units and a subsequent 340 units distributed via lottery.
The program specifically targets low-income workers registered in CadÚnico to help them transition from informal labor to regularized professional activities. Recent distributions took place in São Luís, São José de Ribamar, and Paço do Lumiar, with further distributions scheduled in cities such as Imperatriz, Timon, Caxias, Codó, Açailândia, Bacabal, and Balsas.
