Maranhão police suspend delegate in corruption investigation

Operação Quíron, launched by the Maranhão State Civil Police, has resulted in the 90-day suspension of Regional Delegate Cleosnaldo Brito Sirqueira Júnior, known as Brito Júnior. The investigation, initiated following an anonymous tip to the Special Action Group to Combat Criminal Organizations (Gaeco), targets potential crimes including embezzlement, extortion, procedural fraud, ideological falsehood, and criminal association.

Law enforcement executed four search and seizure warrants in Grajaú and Barra do Corda, targeting police stations and private residences. During the operation at a property belonging to the delegate's father, officers seized a firearm and ammunition, leading to the arrest of a caretaker, Charles Aminde Silveira dos Santos, for illegal possession of a weapon. Computers and mobile phones were also confiscated for analysis.

In addition to the delegate, the investigation involves a police investigator, a municipal guard, and an administrative employee. Brito Júnior has stated that he is awaiting access to the investigation files and claims his right to defense has been restricted. Delegate Eduardo Galvão will serve as the interim commander of the Barra do Corda Regional Police Station.
