Maranhão projected to rank second in Northeast agricultural production

Projections from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) indicate that Maranhão is set to become the second-largest agricultural producer in the Northeast region in 2025. The state's total agricultural production is estimated to reach R$ 13.9 billion.

This regional growth is driven largely by the municipalities of Balsas and Tasso Fragoso in southern Maranhão. Balsas is projected to rank 8th among Northeastern municipalities with a production value of R$ 2.42 billion, while Tasso Fragoso is expected to rank 11th with R$ 1.68 billion. Together, these two cities are expected to contribute approximately R$ 4.1 billion to the state's total.

On a national scale, Maranhão is projected to hold the 13th position in agricultural production value, accounting for 1.50% of Brazil's estimated R$ 927.3 billion total for 2025. In the Northeast, Maranhão is expected to surpass Pernambuco (R$ 11.6 billion) and Piauí (R$ 10.6 billion), trailing only Bahia, which leads the region with R$ 55.4 billion.
