Maranhão Public Ministry investigates mortality investigation delays

The Public Ministry of Maranhão (MPMA) has requested explanations from local authorities regarding delays and discrepancies in investigations into maternal, infant, and fetal deaths in Buriticupu and Bom Jesus das Selvas.

In Buriticupu, an analysis of 61 fetal and infant deaths revealed significant delays. Of these, 48 investigations were overdue, six had not been started, and only three were completed within the expected timeframe. The MPMA also identified issues regarding prenatal indicators and the functioning of death surveillance technical groups.

In Bom Jesus das Selvas, investigators found significant discrepancies between the number of live births reported by the Municipal Health Secretariat and the data recorded in the SINASC system. This data is critical for calculating mortality indicators. Additionally, conflicting information exists regarding a maternal death recorded in 2026; while the municipality claims the investigation is ongoing, state health authorities previously indicated the case was closed. The State Health Secretariat and the Açailândia Regional Health Unit have 15 business days to provide updated data and clarify these inconsistencies.
