Maratea road closure and school shutdowns following landslide

A large rockfall on the SS 18 bypass at Castrocucco in Maratea has caused significant traffic disruptions and safety concerns. The incident, occurring during the night of October 9, was triggered by intense rainfall in the region.

In response to the landslide and the activation of multiple sensors in the landslide-prone area, authorities have closed the affected section of the SS 18. Additionally, Mayor Cesare Albanese has ordered the closure of all schools in Maratea, including the Giovanni Paolo II state institute, due to the combination of severe weather and road instability.

Technical teams are currently conducting stability assessments of the slope and clearing operations. Traffic is being diverted through alternative routes via the Sapri junction and the SP104.
