Marathwada farmers face crisis as suicide rates rise
The Marathwada region in India is experiencing a severe agricultural crisis characterized by rising farmer suicides, driven by drought, crop failure, and debt. According to reports from the Divisional Commissioner's office, 760 farmers committed suicide in the division between January and September 2026. In September alone, 108 deaths were recorded, averaging more than three suicides per day.
District-level data shows Beed recorded the highest number of suicides with 170 cases during the nine-month period, followed by Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Other affected areas include Nanded, Dharashiv, Parbhani, Hingoli, Jalna, and Latur. The crisis is exacerbated by a 38 percent deficiency in rainfall, leading to significant damage to Kharif crops and acute water shortages.
Beyond environmental factors, farmers are struggling with predatory lending practices. In Nanded, a farmer was found dead following allegations of physical assault and extortion by a private finance company regarding a small loan. There are growing calls for the government to provide timely compensation, accessible institutional credit, and stricter action against moneylenders to prevent further loss of life.
