Marburg researchers identify blood marker for pneumonia severity
Researchers at the Philipps-Universität Marburg, in collaboration with the German Center for Lung Research and the CAPNETZ network, have identified a blood marker that can predict the severity of pneumonia. The study focused on eosinophil counts in patients with community-acquired pneumonia.
By analyzing data from 2,880 patients, researchers found that low eosinophil levels are a significant indicator of increased medical needs. Specifically, patients with ten or fewer eosinophils per microliter of blood were more likely to require intensive care treatment (14.2% compared to 8.5% for those with higher counts). These patients also required mechanical ventilation more frequently and experienced longer hospital stays, averaging 10.2 days compared to 9.0 days for those with higher eosinophil levels.
