Marc Márquez takes MotoGP lead after San Marino GP victory

Marc Márquez has claimed the lead in the MotoGP 2026 championship standings following a dominant performance at the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano. After winning both the Saturday Sprint and Sunday's main race, the Ducati rider has erased a 102-point deficit to tie with Jorge Martín at 274 points, holding the top spot due to a higher number of Grand Prix victories.

The race weekend was marked by significant shifts in the standings. Local favorite Marco Bezzecchi suffered a crash on the first lap while leading, and Francesco Bagnaia also failed to finish, leaving both riders behind the leaders. The podium featured a Spanish sweep, with Alex Márquez finishing second and Pedro Acosta in third.

Márquez’s resurgence follows a recovery from shoulder surgeries, a physical struggle he addressed by sharing images of his surgical scars to dispel speculation about his fitness. Ducati management, including Gigi Dall’Igna, praised Márquez’s performance, describing him as a ‘special rider’ who is currently at his absolute best. The championship now moves toward the upcoming round in Austria.
