Marc Overmars resigns from Royal Antwerp FC due to heart health

Marc Overmars has announced his immediate departure as sporting director of Royal Antwerp FC due to severe heart health concerns. The 53-year-old former professional footballer stated that accumulated fatigue and intense stress have pushed his condition to a critical threshold, making it impossible to continue his professional duties.

Overmars previously suffered a heart attack in December 2022, which resulted in damage to 45% of his heart muscle. He noted that the hectic nature of the role, particularly during intense periods like transfer windows, has become unmanageable.

Former technical director Arnold Bruggink expressed understanding regarding the decision, noting the immense pressure and constant performance demands inherent in football management roles. Bruggink remarked that given Overmars' medical history, his ability to continue in such an intensive capacity for as long as he did was notable.
