Marc Summers denies 1994 Tonight Show fight with Burt Reynolds was scripted

Marc Summers has clarified that a famous 1994 altercation on ‘The Tonight Show’ involving Burt Reynolds was not a scripted stunt. Speaking to PEOPLE, the former ‘Double Dare’ host addressed long-standing fan theories that the incident was a ruse.

Summers explained that the tension began during an interview with host Jay Leno. After a verbal exchange regarding Summers being a ‘neatness fanatic,’ Reynolds poured a glass of water on Summers. A physical confrontation ensued when Summers attempted to retaliate, resulting in Reynolds hitting Summers in the face with a cup. The situation escalated into a massive, unscripted pie fight after Leno introduced pies to the stage.

Summers noted that the chaotic segment occurred during a period when Reynolds was undergoing a difficult divorce, contributing to the unpredictable nature of the appearance.
