Marc‑Aurèle Chabot no longer in Canadian Armed Forces after terrorism charge

Marc‑Aurèle Chabot, a former active‑duty corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces, was arrested in July for taking “concrete actions to facilitate terrorist activity,” making him the first serving member charged under Canada’s criminal code for terrorism offenses. The military confirmed on Aug. 4 that Chabot is “no longer a member” of the forces.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police also charged two other men, Raphaël Lagacé and Simon Angers‑Audet, with planning an anti‑government militia near Quebec City, and a fourth soldier, Matthew Forbes, with weapons offences. Forbes remains in the Armed Forces but is not performing duties. Details of the alleged plot are subject to a publication ban ordered by the Quebec Superior Court, with a hearing on lifting the ban set for September.
