Marcel Sabitzer to take break from Austrian national team

Marcel Sabitzer, the 32-year-old midfielder for Borussia Dortmund, has decided to take a break from the Austrian national team. He will not participate in the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.

Sabitzer cited the intense physical demands of recent years, noting that since Euro 2024, he has effectively played through three seasons due to the Club World Cup and the FIFA World Cup. He expressed a need to manage his energy to continue playing at the highest level for several more years, especially given the heavy schedule of the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League.

Following discussions with national team coach Ralf Rangnick, Sabitzer and the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) agreed that he will step away temporarily. A decision regarding his potential return for the UEFA Euro 2028 qualifying matches will be discussed early next year. Sabitzer has earned 102 caps and scored 27 goals for Austria, placing him among the country's most experienced players.
