Marcelo Díaz announces retirement from professional football
Chilean midfielder Marcelo Díaz has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of the 2026 season. The 39-year-old, a key figure in Chile’s ‘Golden Generation’ and a two-time Copa América winner, shared the news via an emotional video, stating, “I am leaving empty. I gave everything I had.”
Díaz will conclude his 21-year career at Universidad de Chile, the club where he began his journey as a youth player. His career includes significant stints in Europe with clubs such as Basel, Hamburg, and Celta Vigo, as well as playing for Racing in Argentina and Libertad in Paraguay.
The announcement has drawn widespread support from former teammates and peers. Igor Lichnovsky called for his legacy to be valued, while Mauricio Pinilla defended Díaz against long-standing rumors regarding information leaks within the national team. Additionally, Gonzalo Jara criticized recent scrutiny directed at Díaz during his final period as captain of Universidad de Chile.
