Marcelo Ebrard focuses on USMCA negotiations over 2030 presidential speculation

Mexico's Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, has requested to be removed from discussions regarding potential candidates for the 2030 presidential election. During a press conference following a Senate appearance, Ebrard clarified his stance by stating, “No, not that they kill me, just that they erase me,” in response to comparisons with former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Ebrard emphasized that his current priority is the negotiation and review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). He expressed the intention to advance the treaty review before the end of 2026 to provide certainty to investors.

Addressing recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding bilateral trade agreements, Ebrard noted that Mexico maintains favorable conditions, including paying the lowest tariffs and serving as a major exporter to the United States. He defended the administration's commercial strategy against opposition claims of negotiation failure, citing growing exports as evidence of success.
