Marcelo Ebrard rejects 2030 presidential candidacy speculation
Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s Secretary of Economy, has formally requested to be removed from lists of potential presidential candidates for the 2030 election. During a press conference following a congressional appearance, Ebrard stated that he is focused on his current responsibilities within the federal government, saying, “Please, if you want, take me off the list, you would be doing me a favor, erase me, I am at my work.”
His comments come amid political speculation and recent moves by allies within the ruling Morena party. Senator Manuel Velasco of the Green Party recently suggested Omar García Harfuch, the Secretary of Security, as a potential candidate, signaling early maneuvering for the succession. While Ebrard has attempted to distance himself from these discussions, political associates, including Senator Emmanuel Reyes Carmona, have continued to publicly project him as a future leader.
In addition to these political developments, Ebrard is managing economic priorities, including a proposal to review the rules of origin for the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) during upcoming meetings in November.
