Marcelo Gallardo appointed as Ecuador national team head coach
The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) has officially appointed Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo as the new head coach of the Ecuador national team. Gallardo, 50, succeeds Sebastián Beccacece following Ecuador's exit from the 2026 World Cup.
Gallardo, known for his highly successful tenure at River Plate where he won 14 titles, has signed a four-year contract. His primary objectives include leading the team through the 2028 Copa América and securing qualification for the 2030 World Cup. FEF President Francisco Egas stated that the federation chose Gallardo for his competitive drive and what he represents for the future of the squad.
Gallardo's technical staff will include Hernán Buján as an assistant and Juan Carlos Docabo as goalkeeper coach. The coach is scheduled to make his debut on September 24 against South Korea in Suwon, marking the start of an Asian tour that includes a match against Japan on October 1.
